#1: Gratitude

I know, I know . . . you’ve seen it all before.  Easy steps to success.  Success and abundance made simple.  How to achieve true prosperity and abundance in your life.  Everyone has their own ideas about how to “make it”, and along with the global commercial explosion of the book and movie The Secret a few years ago came a flood of self-proclaimed success experts into the market place, many of whom have centered their writings/teachings/products around what has become known as the Law of Attraction and other “Universal Laws”.

Now don’t get the idea that I’m here to discount any of this.  Au contraire, I not only believe in these Laws and accept them as facts of life, but the more I study and read everything from success articles to books on spirituality — including those by such contemporary masters such as Dr. Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle and others — the more I’ve come to realize these very principles that have been taught and passed down through pretty much every major culture and spiritual tradition throughout history.  Many of these teachings we, in our modern western culture, often are put off as quaint folk and religious sayings, or they’ve become part of religious dogma and cubbyholed into specific areas of our lives reserved for specific settings and days of the week.

The truth is, these universal principles are at work in our lives every minute and every day of our lives, whether or not we consciously acknowledge or apply them.  They not only affect our own lives, our own level of happiness, prosperity and abundance, but also how we relate to and personally affect the lives of those around us.

In this series I’ll focus on five steps, based on some of these principles, that are key in achieving more success and a greater sense of prosperity and abundance, whatever that may mean to you personally.  The outcome may be different for each of us, but the basic principles for getting there are universal.

The first of these . . .

Express Gratitude Daily

One of the most famous quotes about gratitude originated with the Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero, who said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.”  Gratitude has always been a central spiritual teaching and prime principle for living a life of prosperity and abundance.  Consider the following:

Lao Tzu

Lao Tzu

“If you look to others for fulfillment, you will never be fulfilled. If your happiness depends on money, you will never be happy with yourself. Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the world belongs to you.” ~Lao Tzu

“You have no cause for anything but gratitude and joy.” ~Buddha

“Give thanks in all circumstances . . . ” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

“If the only prayer you said was thank you, that would be enough.” ~ Meister Eckhart

Tony Robbins

Tony Robbins

“When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears.”  ~ Anthony Robbins

“Got no checkbooks, got no banks. Still I’d like to express my thanks – I’ve got the sun in the mornin’ and the moon at night. ~ Irving Berlin

An attitude of gratitude brings great things.” ~ Yogi Bhajan

“In normal life we hardly realize how much more we receive than we give, and life cannot be rich without such gratitude. It is so easy to overestimate the importance of our own achievements compared with what we owe to the help of others.” ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Letters and Papers from Prison

“[Gratitude] turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” ~ Melody Beattie

Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius

“When it comes to life the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.”
~ G.K. Chesterton

“Take full account of what Excellencies you possess, and in gratitude remember how you would hanker after them, if you had them not.”  ~ Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey

“Gratitude is the first sign of a thinking, rational creature.” ~ Solanus Casey

“The grateful heart sits at a continuous feast.” ~ Proverbs 15:15

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough” ~ Oprah Winfrey

In a nutshell, everything good in life begins with an attitude of gratitude.  Without it, we never truly achieve a sense of true happiness, prosperity and abundance.  If we do place gratitude at the top of our daily priority list, then no matter how much or how little we have, we will find contentment and a sense of abundance in what we do have.  We will also attract more good things into our life.

Thanks to a blog post I read yesterday from my friend Cam Green, I’m starting my own 21 Days of Gratitude journal.  Although the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is to express gratitude for something specific in my life, as well as for simply having another day to be joyfully alive and enjoying life, I’m going to add some accountability to my daily practice by posting daily on my Facebook page three things for which I am thankful.  I invite you to join me in this venture, and let me know what changes you see in your life over the next three weeks.

Here’s to living a life of gratitude, prosperity and abundance in every way!
